Christmas Fun Race a Great Success
The Christmas race on Sunday 19th December was a huge success. With over 30 teams in the two-up time trial, everyone from families with kids to the die-hard racers took part and had a great day. Adam Kelly, a vision in pink, took 1st prize. The fancy dress went really well with Urban Monks as the most attractive woman on the day, closely followed by the Crean sisters, Antoinette and Declina. John McDermott, aka ‘sniper’ was in full military camouflage and Fr Gillian Martin helped with the spiritual side. A full story along with pictures will be posted here shortly.

Home-Coming
Reception For Bray Wheeler's Olympian Jenny McCauley All welcome 8pm Thursday 23 September 2004 Ken Duffs Lounge Main Street Bray

September news Jenny McCauley did her club and country proud in Athens.

Jenny returned to the sport of Mountainbiking just over two years ago. Reaching Olympic standard in this short time was no mean feat. A hard season of training and qualification races along with expert advise from the Irish Coach Martin Early put her in a good form going into the event.

Family support was also a major factor in her campaign with the whole greystones crew travelling to Athens to share in the experience.

Two internationally renowed cyclists were present in Jenny's corner. Husband Richy McCauley a former King of the Mountains winner in the FBD Milk Ras and father Dennis Brennan an icon in Irish cycling who also qualified for the Olympics in his day however missed out due a serious accident acted as proud voices of experience. In a style true to her families tradition Jenny battled under sweltering heat on a course with a loose surface which made recovery prohibitive and finished twenty first.

Back on the home front Bray Wheelers members were busy trying to emulate Jennys achievements. At the National Track Championships Urban Monks junior climbed the podium twice to receive both Gold and Silver medals for two disciplines. Urban now gets the honur of wearing a National Champs Jersey a staus symbol in the Peleton. Gary Rigley in what was a hard day for a fourteen year old in the underage section earned a bronze.

Brays only hope in Elite Senior category was the winner of the Summer club Leaque Derek Cunningham. Derek won his qualifying race however in the final race he had no team mates in the bunch to work with and had to launch several lone persuit to chase down repeated attacks. After an exhausting effort Derek took a well deserved Bronze. Dereks raw talent did not go on noticed and he has now been selected to ride in the masters category of the World Championship in Manchester. It was no suprise to his club mates when Derek the peoples champion gave a press release stating he had declined an offer to wear the Irish Jersey and will instead be opting for the Bray Wheelers colours at the World Championships.

The Annual Club prize presentation was a great success thanks to the culinary skills of Tess Martin. Club Man of the year went to Fausto O'Rourke a loyal long standing member. Paddy Kelly won the Club Championship thanking the club for his progress in cycling and the winner of the Harry Dawson spring league was Gary Rigley. Harry Dawson is an enigma of the Bray Wheelers, everyone was delighted to have Harry's family in attendance to present the prizes.
