On Sunday 23rd of May 2004 over 150 international cyclists from Ireland, Britain, Kazakhstan, Slovenia, Germany and Wales set out on a gruelling quest for the holy grail of Irish cycling - victory in the FBD MILK RAS. Eight days, 1200 kilometres and 29 major mountain climbs later one will hold the magnificent George Plant Trophy aloft in the Phoenix Park, for one the quest will have ended - who will it be?

The Ras being the biggest stage race of the year in Ireland previously known as The Tour Of Ireland is home to many great Irish champions such as Stephen Roche and Philip Cassidy who have both emerged victorious in The Ras in years gone by.The race's graduation to a 2.5 ranked event on the UCI international calendar three years ago is a big part of this overseas domination. World ranking points attract bigger teams, and so good professional outfits and strong national teams are amongst those making the journey each year.

In recognising this new trend Co.Wicklow will be represented by The Bray Wheelers managed by Herbie Monks who has selected a strong team of riders to compete in the shake up for the prestigous County Team prize. Fergal Kelly, Brian Harris, Derek Cunningham, Frank O'Leary who all have previous experience of the Ras and an up and coming senior new to the Ras circuit Robert Wyse will be working closely in the battle to take the yellow yersy for their County. The Team made a statement in the opening stage finishing in Trim Co.Meath by all five riders finishing at the front of the Peleton and Frank leading Fergal out in the sprint finish placing him 28th on general classification.

Entering a team in a stage race of such scale is a daunting task financially and the club is delighted to have the corporate backing of local business's without which participation would be impossible. Enterprise Rent A Car of Bray are providing the team transport, Mikes Bikes of Patrick st Dun Laoghaire supporting the sport as always are providing equipment and finance and Saharax Patio Heaters of Kilcoole a significant employer in the area are providing much needed finincial backing.
